Visiting the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is one of the areas of ultimate conservation in Uganda—a rare place for one to view rhinos in their natural habitat. It is situated in Nakasongola District, about 176 km north of Kampala, on 70 km² of savanna and woodland. This is the only place in Uganda where you will find these creatures in the wild, thus being a must-visit area for anyone interested in wildlife and those involved in conservation alike.

Six rhinos were introduced under a broad scheme to re-introduce rhinos to Uganda, which was declared extinct by poachers, back in 2005. Good breeding programs have seen the population steadily increase as the Rhino Fund Uganda, in conjunction with the Uganda Wildlife Authority management, undertakes to protect the animals from poaching and habitat loss.

What to Expect When Visiting Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Your visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary will involve rhino tracking with guided safaris led by some of the most experienced rangers. This is going to be a real adventure for you—being in close contact with the forest, where the rhinos can only be traced, learning about their behavioral information, their diet, and threats. The rangers will be at your service with much information on conservation efforts in the sanctuary and more generally in Africa in preserving rhinos.

Some other major fauna within the sanctuary are the antelopes, monkeys, and birds with a diversity of species in addition to rhino. It, therefore, becomes an ideal place both for bird watching and nature walks. More than 300 species of birds find solace in the sanctuary’s varied ecosystem, among which includes the rare Shoebill stork that is mainly seen in the wetlands.

Support to Conservation Efforts

When you visit Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, not only do you enjoy a wildlife experience like no other, you also come face to face with the critical conservation work aiding the survival of rhinos in Uganda. In fact, your entrance fees and charity contributions are plowed back directly into supporting the operations, anti-poaching operations, and educational programs of the sanctuary.

The Sanctuary has guest house facilities and also camping sites to fully cater for one’s escapade in the sanctuary. In particular, an overnight stay will afford you ample time to survey the sanctuary and still have a chance to either do night walks or have an interesting ride at the nearby Lugogo Swamp.

Planning Your Visit

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary can be best visited throughout the year. It’s, therefore, highly recommended that tourists endeavor to book their rhino tracking in advance during peak seasons.

Whether you are a wild life enthusiast, conservation supporter, or simply a lover of unique experiences, the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary won’t disappoint. This is an opportunity to witness the successful resurgence of an endangered species and support ongoing efforts in the protection of Uganda’s natural heritage.
